FRESH FICTION

"Fascinating new series involving immortal warriors who are in a race to solve a chilling prophecy."

Ajax Petrakos is one of seven Spartan warriors who became immortal when they accepted a deal with a god to protect humankind. But after 2500 years of fighting and living a solitary existence with only his brothers in arms, Ajax is bored and tired of answering to a higher power. Unfortunately, that higher power is asking Ajax to travel to Savannah, Georgia, to locate Shayanna Angel, the woman promised to him long ago by their oracle. The scene he comes up on as he arrives at his destination of the beautiful woman and a demon is one of awe and urgency.

Shay Angel's grief for her beloved mother is all-consuming, yet the letter she keeps in her pocket changes her understanding of who her mother really is. Shay is always trying to get into the family business of demon hunting, but both her mother and brothers claim that since their ability to see demons only runs in the male side, it's too dangerous for her to go on the hunt. But Shay has a secret and it guides her to the local cemetery to meet a demon. What she finds is a black-winged angel.

What an exciting beginning to this new Gods of Midnight series! Very well-done by the talented Deidre Knight. I loved it!

Knight provides an intriguing new twist to both Greek mythology and legendary Spartan warriors with this searing new series, as she sets up an alternate world that begs to be explored. SRR GRADE: A

Deidre Knight’s new series Gods of Midnight is about 7 immortal warriors from Ancient Sparta. Given the option of protecting humankind for eternity or crossing over to Heaven, these seven brave men choose to protect and serve. Red Fire is the first book in this series and is filled with demons, hunters, immortals, gods and oracles. There isn’t one slow sentence in this book and I couldn’t put it down until I finished.

Ajax is burnt out. He’s fought the good fight for over 2,500 years and he’s exhausted and would prefer to drown his troubles in alcohol instead of going on. There is only thing keeping him from madness, and that is the prophecy that there is a mortal woman, Shay Angel, who is destined to be his mate. The only problem – he has no idea where she is or what time period she’ll be living in.

Shay has just buried her mother and is trying to hold off demons that are now threatening her. But she’s not supposed to be able to see the demons. Over protected by her two older brothers she stubbornly sets out by herself to get some answers when she is captured by demons.

Red Fire is an excellent story. Evil abounds and yet through it all there is goodness so pure it is amazing. I loved that this demon story is so unlike any others I’ve read before; the entire story is pure genius – original, enticing and thoroughly entertaining. Red Fire has earned a place on my keeper shelf – and I can’t wait to see where this series goes next!
